Motivate, Motivate, Motivate!
The second in a three-part series on Inspiration, Motivation and Innovation
This is meant to help you if you are an aspiring, experienced or even veteran, entrepreneur.
Distractions. What are distractions doing to you? Ever feel like you’re getting so distracted by so much around you that you lose your focus and motivation? What can you do to stay aware and bring your motivation back?
A couple years ago I was working with a client that I had been working with for a while. We have a wonderful relationship! One day, he made a statement that stuck with me. He said, “Lately, you seem to be distracted.” Well, that hit me like a brick wall! Of course, he was right. I had a lot of family issues happening around me and I was allowing them to distract me from my work. I wasn’t even really aware of it! Now, it’s not a good thing when a client points this out. I had to become more aware of what was distracting me and make some changes fast! (By the way, I’m still working with that client).
I find when I’m becoming distracted and losing my motivation, there’s definitely a reason. And it usually has a lot to do with the way I’m feeling or the way in which I am handling my life. So what do I do? I focus on ONE thing that brings me back -to the motivation – and I keep moving on.
Some people suggest vision boards. They don’t work for me. I become distracted with too many things. I had to learn that I’m the type of person that needs to focus on ONE thing, consistently. These days, that’s my granddaughter. I have her picture on my desk in my office. I have her picture on my phone (several, actually)…but every time I feel like I’m starting to get distracted and lose my motivation, I look at her picture and that beautiful smile brings me back to why I do what I do. Why I’m where I am. And that gives me the motivation to keep moving. I want to be around for a long time.
I want to see her grow up and become successful and with that, know I had made a meaningful difference in her life. Being a grandmother creates a difference in my life. What makes a difference in your life?
If you find yourself becoming distracted by too many things around you, try focusing on ONE thing. You can even change that one thing weekly, but for several days, focus on one thing that propels you forward every time you look at it or think about it.
Let’s go back and review the six inner questions from my previous blog post about Inspiration:
- Where do I want my life to be?
- What makes me happy?
- What do I need at this point in my life and moving forward?
- How am I going to get the life I truly want?
- Who can I help?
- How can I apply what I’ve learned about myself to my work?
“I tend to get my hands into all these other things and all these distractions, and after a while I start feeling depleted.” – Scott Weiland
Talk to yourself. Give yourself a pep talk. It’s amazing what having a conversation with yourself will do. We’ve heard it over and over again – but it really is all about mindset, what we tell ourselves – and how we speak to ourselves. Choose your words carefully and with purpose. Be your biggest, brightest and best cheerleader!
Notice how doing just these couple of simple things – focusing on one thing and how you talk to yourself – become habits. Kick your distractions out and motivate!
My next blog in this series will be about innovation, so stay tuned.
I’d love to hear what you came up. If you would like to share please email me at Cindy@CindyWClark.com or share here so we can all learn how to motivate each other!
